Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, also known as DBT, is a type of therapy for individuals suffering from problematic behaviors and strong emotions. Individuals learn skills to not necessarily act on the emotions they are feeling. Problematic behaviors are also replaced with more constructive behaviors.

DBT is effective for several conditions including

  • Anxiety Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
  • PTSD
  • Substance use disorder

DBT teaches acceptance skills and change skills.

Acceptance skills associated with DBT include mindfulness and distress tolerance while change skills including emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware in the moment
  • Distress tolerance is the method in which to tolerate difficult situations
  • Interpersonal effectiveness is the practice of asking for what you want and also learning to say no while maintaining relationships with others
  • Emotion regulation is the practice of decreasing sensitivity to painful emotions and also slowly changing undesirable emotions.
