Defiant behavior is common in children, however children with oppositional defiant disorder have a more extreme version that impacts their development and daily life. Oppositional defiant disorder is diagnosed when there is a period of six months, or more of such extreme behavior. Children suffering from oppositional defiant disorder may also have other mental illnesses such as ADHD that exacerbate their oppositional defiant disorder.
