Disorders

At Northlake Behavioral Health System, we are committed to your health and well being. Here are a few common disorders that we can help you with.

Bipolar disorders are described by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a group of brain disorders that cause extreme change in a person’s energy, mood, and ability to function.

Bipolar disorder includes three different conditions bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.

  • Bipolar I disorder is a manic-depressive disorder that exists with and without psychotic episodes
  • Bipolar II disorder consists of depressive and manic episodes which alternate and are typically less severe and do not inhibit function
  • Cyclothymic disorder causes brief episodes of hypomania and depression

The first steps in identifying bipolar disorder is to visit a doctor or mental health professional. At Northlake Behavioral Health System, our licensed doctors may perform a physical evaluation to rule out any other conditions that may be causing symptoms. If no other illnesses are present, the doctor will conduct a comprehensive mental health evaluation to assess the patient’s symptoms in accordance with the specific criteria from the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a person must have experienced at least one episode of mania or hypomania.

Suicidal behavior disorder is a proposed DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition), diagnosis which would be assigned to individuals who have made a suicide attempt within the past two years. A suicide attempt is defined, as a self-harmed act deliberately carried out where there is a clear expectation of death. Considering suicidal behavior as a condition independent of depression or other mental disorders.
